Swimming Through Sound: French Duo UTO and the Depths of Electronic Pop
Exploring UTO's Philosophical Spin on Retro Electronica with Their Track "À la Nage" 2022
French duo UTO blends electronic pop, trip-hop, dream-pop, and synth-pop to create a unique, prismatic sound that captivates listeners. Their 2022 track "À la Nage" stands out as a retro electronica bop reminiscent of Stereolab, combining light, catchy rhythms with deeper philosophical undertones. Despite their growing popularity on platforms like Spotify and Bandcamp, UTO remains a hidden gem in both French and English music circles, offering a fresh take on the evolving electronic pop landscape.
French duo UTO's electronic pop sound incorporates trip-hop, dream-pop, techno, and synth-pop into light sounds creating a rich, diverse musical texture that has been described as 'prismatic'.
I don’t love everything, but I see the appeal. “À la nage” stands out for me as a kind of retro electronica bop reminiscent of Stereolab. While they seem pretty popular on Spotify and Bandcamp, I haven’t been able to find much written on music sites about them in French or in English.
The band’s own description of this song makes philosophical connections that make me wonder if they’re being serious. I think they are.
UTO 'A la Nage' is a strange extract from “L’homme qui dort” (‘A Man Asleep’) by Perec, which is about crossing a lake in the middle of one's head, through this small aqueous zone that innervates the whole.
This is the official video, which kind of takes something out of it for me. The song stands much better on its own.
The band’s description of the video:
The video shot in a single-sequence responds to this movement of crossing, without cutting, far from the water. Through the eye of an imaginary friend, we first follow a couple taking care of each other while exploring the world, then a bunch of friends going about their business.
A little weird, but not quite weird enough.
