Unlocking the Benefits of Leboncoin: France's Answer to Craigslist
How to Find Great Deals on Secondhand Goods, Furniture, and Apartments in France
Leboncoin is France's leading classified ads platform, similar to Craigslist in the United States, offering a wide range of items from secondhand furniture to real estate listings. Whether you're looking to save money on appliances, find unique furniture, or hunt for an apartment, Leboncoin provides a user-friendly experience for buyers and sellers across the country. With options for in-person transactions, built-in messaging, and affordable shipping through services like Mondial Relay and Colissimo, it’s an essential resource for anyone living in or moving to France.
Leboncoin, the French equivalent of Craigslist, is a widely used platform for classified ads in France. Like its U.S. counterpart, it connects private sellers and professionals directly with buyers, offering everything from kitchen knives and plants to furniture. If you're looking to save money and prefer a more personalized touch to your home without resorting to the typical IKEA look, Leboncoin is an excellent option for finding unique, affordable items.

Leboncoin also includes an embedded messaging tool for easier communication between buyers and sellers. Insurance available for all transactions for about €1 for most smaller items, adding a layer of security to the exchange process. If the seller agrees to it, many items offer shipping from all over France as well, making it a convenient way to purchase items like small appliances. If you have a euro-based credit card (ideally from a French bank) attached, it is almost easier – and definitely can be cheaper – than buying on many other sites.
For local transactions, some users prefer meeting in person to inspect items and complete exchanges. We have done this for some smaller, locally available items, plants and furniture. Facebook Marketplace is also a popular option for such local transactions. In those cases, it’s best to use cash.
Leboncoin's just facilitates the connection between buyers and sellers. It doesn't directly handle payments, shipping, or insurance, but does connect those services in ways that Craigslist does not, as far as I now. Buyers and sellers are responsible for organizing payment, shipping, and any necessary insurance.
apartments
Leboncoin is particularly known for its focus on the French real estate market, providing a specialized platform for apartment searches in France. If you're interested in apartment hunting in France, you'll find valuable information and resources on this platform, but you’ll also need to learn some of the specific French real estate vocabulary, which was an uphill climb for us at first.
I’ll do a whole separate post on that in the next few weeks. It’s a lot.
add a translation app
The whole site is in French - only in French. It really helped me to install a browser translation app, especially if your French language skills are limited. Having a connected bank account can streamline the payment process. Local delivery services, such as Mondial Relay and Colissimo (a part of the French postal system), can efficiently ship items to your location. Opting for delivery to a nearby store or café can be a cost-effective choice, also ensuring someone is available to accept the package.
If you have all of those things set up, which don’t take too long, it’s a pretty killer app for new and used items here.
Please note: August is not a good time to get many things done in France and this includes shipping, if last summer was any indicator.
Generally, don’t try to get too much done in France in August. It’s unlikely to work out smoothly.
