French Music: Moderat Concert at the Palais Royal under construction

A great electronic concert in an amazing space, one of a handful of concerts livestreamed from the Grand Palais in Paris during its restoration.

French Music: Moderat Concert at the Palais Royal under construction

Moderat (“Mohd-raht”) is formed of Gernot Bronsert & Sebastian Szary of Modeselektor, and Sascha Ring of Apparat.

Modeselektor has opened for Radiohead, blending glitch, electro, and hip-hop sounds while building explosive club tracks with intense bass. Apparat's introspective style uses conventional pop structures, shoegaze synths and atmospheric layers. While both electronic, they’re stylistically miles apart, but it works. As Apparat, the artists have had some really difficult partnerships and aggressive falling outs but have continued to work together on occasional projects.

One of their collaborations was named Auf Kosten der Gesundheit - “at the Cost of Health” - which gives some sense of how they found their work together.

Even if it’s not your style, the concert is worth watching for the amazing footage of the Grand Palais in the midst of restoration, and the backdrop of Paris at night among the scaffolding and construction equipment. Other concerts in this space are when the restoration is further along. It’s a wonderful series for that, even I don’t like every one of the concerts.
