It’s the third episode of the Finding Home Elsewhere podcast! I am so happy people have been enjoying these so far and I feel so privileged to have had the chance to speak with every one of my guests. It’s been a lot of fun and I am learning so much. Thank you all.

In this episode, we dive into the fascinating journey of Will Scheckel - professor and antique stove restorer, among many, many other things. Will left New York to live in Germany for 10 years from 1992 – 2002, with a brief summer escape to the Jersey Shore in 2001 before returning home to the US.

Will Scheckel

Will Scheckel’s story goes through a series of twists and turns as he considers not only how his life changed when he moved abroad, but discovering the parts of a culture you can’t read about.

When Will left for Germany after finishing university, he was sure he was going to stay, but home was back in America.

In our conversation, we cover everything from his personal experiences to moments of crisis (yes, even in supermarket aisles) to why they really want you to argue in Ikea. Through it all, Will shares how he discovered his own sense of “home” and how he helps others do the same.

After a series of turns (or “pivots,” Will might say), my wife (and editor) pointed out that the interview truly shines in the last 15 minutes, where Will ties his reflections together.

I loved chatting with him, and I hope you’ll enjoy listening.

A Small Ask

Finding Home Elsewhere is a reader-supported project. I post three times a week about music, food, and the curious history of France, as well as my own experiences living in a new place. Your support—no matter how small—means so much.
